So the country has chosen to leave, 38% of the electorate choosing that option, 36.5% remaining and 25.5% simply didn’t vote.

A lot of people are rejoicing and a lot of people are quite terrified, but really there’s no reason to rejoice and there’s no reason to panic, because in all reality, whilst everything has now changed, it’s all just stayed the same.

The EU actually, had no negative effect on the UK really, it didn’t change NHS funding, nor support for pensioners, the disabled, veterans or the homeless, it didn’t even really make much if any difference to UK immigration. As a large growing economy, in or out people would have come and we’d have wanted them too. In actual fact EU funding has supported all of the above and we wont now get that and it could be argued that it gave us unfettered access to the largest trading block in the world; but perhaps we’d have got that regardless.

The UK government, contrary to the lies told by most in the leave campaign is and always was sovereign over the EU, we choose to accept any EU laws, they never were forced on us, and indeed voted for 2,500 EU laws and against 50 in the past 2 decades. (see the  excellent lecture delivered by Michael Duggan on EU Law here)

There were less unelected bureaucrats in the whole of the EU than in the UK government and none of them have power to make or enforce a law, but let’s not let the facts get in the way of Boris telling an exciting story.

Leaving the EU is actually just blaming and punishing the EU and the majority of the UK for successive UK governments underfunding of all of the above vital services and causes. It is the UK government that needs changing not our relationship with the EU, it is the UK government that has brought on the problems in the UK over the past 41 years, nothing to do with the EU. So the referendum be seen as a kick to ‘the establishment’ however we’ve merely replaced one establishment with a different establishment; and most likely one old Etonian with a very similar old Etonian.

Leaving the EU will however make little difference, the NHS will not suddenly get any more money, nor pensioners, veterans, the homeless or any of these causes. We will continue to trade with the EU and the rest of the world as we had before, only now it could cost us more due to tariffs under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreement.

Alternatively we will agree a trade agreement with the EU, likely in 5-10 years,  which can only be begun after the 2 year negotiations just to leave. But if any trade deal is anything like the deals Norway, Switzerland, Turkey or Canada have then it will cost us the same £350M a week to get access to free trade area, but we won’t get a rebate (discount) on that like the £100M+ we get now, we will have to accept most EU laws, like the above countries do, and we will have to accept free movement of labour, just as we do now, only this time we get no voting rights in the EU and no say in the laws we have to accept.

Therefore, here’s the kicker, the reality is that nothing will actually change, so my message to ‘remainers’ is, you needn’t worry so much and ‘leavers’, get ready to be disappointed because none of the things you expect are about to happen.
